Darts Pro: Eric Bristow, MBE

"The Crafty Cockney"
June - 2000

The name Eric Bristow is snynonymous with the sport of Darts world wide, from Toronto to Tokyo, Birmingham to Brisbane, Newcastle to New York. "The Crafty Cockney", as he is famously known, has won every major title in the sport, not once, but many times. Five times World Champion, five times World Master, four times North American Champion. The list, it seems, is endless.

Since the game's rise to world wide popularity on television in 1975. Bristow has been there on top. Brash, arrogant and outspoken, a street-fighter yes, but an absolute winner. Descriptions that portray him perfctly, yet when acting as a "spokesperson" for corporate clients, he has that uncanny ability to become disciplined, dedicated and articulate. The mark of a true professional!

In his seventeen year career he has frequently stepped out of the "darts world" and has guested on such light entertainment TV shows as "Celebrity Squares", "Leo Sayer Show", and "Never the Twain".

He has also fronted Network TV advertisements for such diverse products as Milk, Convenience Foods, Holidays and Newspapers. On these occasions he has demonstrated a sense of humour, graciousness and personal charm, which belie his utter ruthlessness in the sporting arena.

At 39 years of age, Bristow is in the prime of his career. With the sport expanding rapidly world wide, Bristow is in the vanguard of this expansion. The richest tournament ever was staged in Tokyo in June 1988. Inevitably it seems, it was won by Eric Bristow along with its record winners purse of $67,000. World Grand Prix Champion, Bristow continues to establish records and reinforce his rightful claim to be the greatest player the game has ever seen.

As final testimony to his standing amongst sporting "greats", Eric was honoured by Her Majesty the Queen in February 1989 with the award of the M.B. E. for services to Sport. The first and only Dart Player to be accorded such a high honour.

Just a few of the vast number of titles won by Eric Bristow:

  • 5 times Embassy World Champion
  • 5 times World Master
  • 1985 & 1988 World Matchplay Champion
  • 1988 World Grand Prix Champion
  • 4 times World Cup Singles Champion
  • 4 times British Champion
  • 4 times North American Open Champion
  • 1987, 1988 Lucky Lights Challenge of Champions
  • 1991 Canadian Open Pairs Champion
  • 1995 World Pairs Champion
